Backup and Restore the Registry

To Backup the Registry:

Click on Start and Run. Type scanregw and click OK.

The registry scanner will start checking your registry and when complete will ask if you would like to backup the current registry.

Click the Yes button and the oldest backup will be replaced by your current.

To Restore a Previously saved Registry:

Restoring the registry must be done from a command prompt. To get to a command prompt restart the computer and hold down the Ctrl key or by tapping F8 during the boot process.
Select Command Prompt Only from the Menu.
At the C:\>type scanreg /restore and press Enter.
You will see a list of 5 dates that you can select from. Select one that was prior to you having problems.
Select Exit and reboot the computer.

Increase the number of saved backups:

Click on Start and Find then select Files or Folders.
Type scanreg.ini in the Named: box. Ensure C: is select in the Look in: box.
Click on Find Now. Double click on the scanreg.ini file and it will open in Notepad. You will see a line MaxBackupFiles=5
Change the 5 to the number of backups you would like to store and save the changes.
