When you start Windows, you may receive the following error message:
Error Loading Kernel. You must reinstall Windows.
- Restart your computer and hold down the Ctrl key until you see the Windows 98 startup menu. Choose Command Prompt Only.
- At C:\>type cd\windows\system [Enter]
- At C:\Windows\System\>type
ren kernel32.dll kernel32.old [Enter]
- You will need to extract a new copy of kernel32.dll from the Win98 cd. First download a bootdisk. Download to your hard drive somewhere like your desktop. Do not download it directly to the floppy.
- Click on the download file and it will extract the files to the floppy.
- Restart the computer with the bootdisk inserted into the floppy.
- When prompted select Start with Cdrom Support.
- If you downloaded the bootdisk from the link above your cdrom will be bumped up one letter from what you normally know it as. We shall assume your cdrom is normally D: and now E: If you are using a bootdisk other than the one on this page your cdrom may or may not be bumped up one letter.
- At A:\>type ext [Enter]
This will start the Extract Command Line Helper.
- You will see this message: Please enter the path to the Windows .cab files (a:): type
E:\Win98 [Enter]
- Please enter the Name(s) of the file(s) you want to extract:type
kernel32.dll [Enter]
- Please enter the path to extract to:type
C:\Windows\System [Enter]
- Is this Okay? (y/n): type Y [Enter]
It will now find the file and extract it. You will be taken back to A:\>
- Remove the floppy and restart the computer
