Error loading Kernel

When you start Windows, you may receive the following error message:

Error Loading Kernel. You must reinstall Windows.

  1. Restart your computer and hold down the Ctrl key until you see the Windows 98 startup menu. Choose Command Prompt Only.

  2. At C:\>type cd\windows\system [Enter]

  3. At C:\Windows\System\>type

  5. Click on the download file and it will extract the files to the floppy.

  6. Restart the computer with the bootdisk inserted into the floppy.

  7. When prompted select Start with Cdrom Support.

  8. If you downloaded the bootdisk from the link above your cdrom will be bumped up one letter from what you normally know it as. We shall assume your cdrom is normally D: and now E: If you are using a bootdisk other than the one on this page your cdrom may or may not be bumped up one letter.

  9. At A:\>type ext [Enter]
This will start the Extract Command Line Helper.

  10. You will see this message: Please enter the path to the Windows .cab files (a:): type
    E:\Win98 [Enter]

  11. Please enter the Name(s) of the file(s) you want to extract:type
    kernel32.dll [Enter]

  12. Please enter the path to extract to:type
    C:\Windows\System [Enter]

  13. Is this Okay? (y/n): type Y [Enter]
It will now find the file and extract it. You will be taken back to A:\>
