I have met a number of fellow surfers who's hidden shelliconcache file is most reluctant to rebuild after desktop icon changes. This results in the desktop icons changing noticabely slowly from default on bootup.
To make matters worse none of the MS cures such as Q132668, help.
In the past I have forced the rebuild by fiddling about with the desktop icon arrangement and icon sizes/spacing but this can still take several attempts.
At long last I have found a workaround that works everytime and also restores the shelliconcache file if it is missing:
- Empty the recycle bin.
- Put all the shortcut desktop icons into the bin (NOT programs or MS produced icons such as My Computer or Recycle Bin
- Restart the computer then restore the icons from the bin.
Note that the new shelliconcache file arrives after restart while the desktop icons are still in the recycle bin. It is unchanged when the computer is restarted after the icons have been restored to the desktop. I assume that the location of the icons (bin or desktop) is of no consequence.
Again, Credit goes to Derek.
